CS2 Doppler Phases Explained
Updated 2026-06-21
What CS2 Doppler and Gamma Doppler phases are (Phase 1-4), the rare Ruby, Sapphire, Black Pearl and Emerald variants, how to identify your phase, and which phases are the most valuable.
What is a Doppler?
Doppler is a knife finish with a swirling, galaxy-like paint that comes in several distinct colour variations called 'phases'. It arrived with the Chroma cases; a separate finish, Gamma Doppler, came with the Gamma cases. Both apply only to knives.
Unlike a normal skin, two Doppler knives with the exact same name - say 'Karambit | Doppler (Factory New)' - can look completely different, because the phase (the specific colour pattern) is assigned randomly when the item is created and is NOT part of the market name.
That's why identical-looking listings can carry very different prices: the phase, not just the float, often drives the value.
The standard phases: Phase 1-4
Both Doppler and Gamma Doppler come in four standard phases - Phase 1, Phase 2, Phase 3 and Phase 4 - each with its own characteristic mix of colours (for example, regular Doppler Phase 2 leans pink/red while Phase 4 shows more blue).
There's no single 'best' standard phase: desirability depends on the knife model and the look, and certain phases carry premiums over others for specific knives. A clean, low-float example of any phase is desirable.
The rare phases: Ruby, Sapphire, Black Pearl & Emerald
Beyond the numbered phases, each finish has ultra-rare special phases worth dramatically more.
Regular Doppler can roll Ruby (a deep solid red), Sapphire (a deep solid blue) and Black Pearl (a dark, pearlescent finish). Sapphire and Ruby are the rarest and most expensive - often many times the price of a numbered phase - while Black Pearl is rare but typically a step below them.
Gamma Doppler can roll Emerald (a rich solid green), its top-tier phase and one of the most sought-after finishes in the game. These special phases turn an already-pricey knife into a four- or five-figure item.
How to check your Doppler's phase
Because the phase isn't in the market name, you identify it from the item itself. The most reliable way is the in-game inspect link (or a screenshot/3D view): Ruby, Sapphire, Black Pearl and Emerald are obvious by colour, and the numbered phases can be told apart by their colour distribution.
Marketplaces that surface phase data read it from the item's pattern (paint) information. When buying, confirm the phase from the listing's inspect link or a labelled phase tag rather than the name alone - the name only tells you it's a Doppler, not which phase.
Value & buying Doppler knives on skins.ai
Phase is one of the biggest price factors for Doppler knives. Roughly: Sapphire, Ruby and Emerald sit at the top, Black Pearl below them, and the numbered Phase 1-4 form the (still expensive) base tier - with float and the specific knife model layering on top.
skins.ai compares live Doppler prices across every marketplace we track and highlights the cheapest listing, so you can find the float you want at the best price. Browse Dopplers from the CS2 Knives category and use the price comparison on each knife's page.
FAQ
How do I know which Doppler phase I have?
The phase isn't in the item's name - check the in-game inspect link or a screenshot. Ruby (red), Sapphire (blue), Black Pearl (dark pearl) and Emerald (green) are obvious by colour; the numbered Phase 1-4 are told apart by their colour distribution. Many marketplaces tag the phase from the item's pattern data.
Which Doppler phase is the most valuable?
For regular Doppler, Sapphire and Ruby are the rarest and most expensive, followed by Black Pearl, then the numbered phases. For Gamma Doppler, Emerald is the top-tier rare phase. Exact premiums vary by knife model and float.
What's the difference between Doppler and Gamma Doppler?
They're two separate finishes. Regular Doppler (from Chroma cases) has Ruby, Sapphire and Black Pearl as its special phases; Gamma Doppler (from Gamma cases) has Emerald. Both also come in the standard Phase 1-4.
Is Sapphire or Ruby rarer?
Both are extremely rare special phases of regular Doppler and command similar, very high prices. Their relative rarity and price vary a little by knife model, but both sit well above Black Pearl and the numbered phases.
Why don't marketplace names show the Doppler phase?
Steam's market name only includes the finish ('Doppler') and wear, not the phase, because the phase is part of the item's randomly-assigned pattern data. You read it from the inspect link or a marketplace's phase tag.
Are Doppler phases random?
Yes - the phase is assigned randomly when the item is unboxed or traded up, like the pattern index. You can't choose it, so you buy the specific phase you want on the market.
